Perdition

The feel of sweat pooling in the small of your back
The sun beating down on the ground ‘til it cracks
The salt and the sting as it meets in your eyes
And you, you’re alone. Not a cloud in the skies.

The dunes of the grass and the waves of the wheat
The wind as it blows at the leaves by your feet
A hush and a rush as it sweeps through the stalks
Carrying birds overhead with their twittery talks

An aura of quiet rides in on the breeze
All signs of life have withdrawn to the trees
The thrum of the air as your soles leave the dirt
Dust caked to the back of your sweat-sodden shirt

The ground twists away as you rise in the air
The Sun is now gone, leaving nothing else there
You can see just where the stars lend their light
And every part of you says to run, or to fight

You’re dashing down a street that wasn’t there before
Each alleyway blocked, there’s a lock on each door
The pound of your heart matching the sound of your feet
On the slick-black pavement of the rainy city street

Each breath becomes thicker and burns in your chest
Your legs, almost tangled, are begging for rest
With dread you are filled that, behind you, they lay
But before you can turn the sky falls away

The scream of the air as it runs past your face
Your stomach’s been ripped from its rightful place
You tumble and turn, by gravity attacked
You regain your bearings, and brace for impact

You fall up in bed, face coated in sweat
The morning is humid, the bedsheets are wet
The now-rising Sun bears the dawn of today
In your ear beats your heart, but you are okay.
